Biography

Sigrid de Jong is an architectural historian, senior lecturer and researcher in architectural history and theory at the Department of Architecture at ETH Zurich (gta Institute), where she currently co-directs the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) funded research project ‘Building Identity: Character in Architectural Debate and Design (1750–1850)’ (2022–2026). She is also finishing her monograph on the subject of architectural and urban experience in eighteenth-century Paris and London. She holds a PhD from Leiden University (2010). Her book Rediscovering Architecture: Paestum in Eighteenth-Century Architectural Experience and Theory was published by Yale University Press in 2014, and she edited (with Caroline van Eck) the Companion to Eighteenth-Century Architecture (Wiley/Blackwell, 2017). Her research interests focus on eighteenth- and nineteenth-century architecture and architectural theory, the human responses to buildings, landscapes, and the city, in the public realm, in discourse and design, and more broadly on female agency, materiality, nature and ecology.
