Biography


Markus is a historian and curator of art and architecture who received his master’s degree in history of art from the Courtauld Institute and doctorate in history and theory of architecture from ETH Zurich. His research interests include questions on the relationship of art and architecture with power, cultures of (Russian) empire, display and mediation of architecture, histories of avant-garde, representation of architecture, as well as creative processes of art and design, in particular drawing. He currently works as at EPFL – Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne working on an SNSF-funded research project on architectures of Russian and Soviet imperialism. He has previously held research positions at University College London, Institute of Advanced Studies and at University of Helsinki and taught at the Estonian Academy of Arts and the London Metropolitan University. He was the inaugural Director of Projects and Curator of Drawing Matter collections in the UK and has curated multiple celebrated exhibitions both on historical and contemporary topics, most recently “From Sky to Earth” at Tselinny Center of Arts in Almaty, Kazakhstan. His writing has been published in a number of journals, including Comparative Studies in Society and History, Art History, Burlington Magazine, Log, Harvard Design Magazine and his work and exhibitions have been featured among others by Financial Times, BBC World Service, Art Forum and Architects´ Newspaper. He was the general chair of the EAHN Thematic Conference organized in Helsinki in 2023 titled “States in Between: Architecture and Empire in East Europe and North Eurasia.”
